Making a major decision without waiting for certainty

A thoughtful decision can include uncertainty. The work is to distinguish what you need to learn from what you may never know in advance.

Write the actual decision

Replace “What should I do with my life?” with a question you can examine: “Do I accept this role under these conditions?” Name the available options, including waiting when that is a real choice.

Choose your criteria before choosing your answer

Identify what matters in this decision: time, relationships, meaningful work, location, or financial commitments. Consider where your criteria conflict and what tradeoffs you can accept. Financial or legal questions may require an appropriately qualified adviser.

Separate information from prediction

List facts you can obtain, assumptions you can test, and outcomes you cannot guarantee. Ask one question that would materially change your choice. Gathering more information is useful when it addresses a real gap.

Choose a next step and a review point

Your next step might be a conversation, a small experiment, or a decision. Give it a reasonable date and identify what would make you reconsider. Coaching can help organize your thinking; the choice remains yours.

A question to carry into your week

What is one choice you could make differently, and what would help you follow through?
